Hey there! Today was such a great day, I had the pleasure of attending the clothing swap event hosted by the Social Club Amsterdam. It was so much fun! There were two vintage stores that popped up, and I got to talk to a bunch of circular economy enthusiasts, who were just as excited as I was to be there.
One of the vintage stores was BiBi AND JEAN, and their focus was on upcycling and waste cycling. They mainly focused on transforming sweaters, denims, and jeans into unique and interesting pieces. The way they worked was by using their wasted jeans and turning them into awesome items, like the super cool patchwork jeans I saw! They even made one of their bags from curtains for the inner lining and jeans for the outside, which looked absolutely cute and stylish. I think they have a lot of knowldge in the vintage market, and it was such a pleasure to meet them!
The next one is Jutka & Riska. They are well-known for their vintage clothing collections and even have their own self-creation line. I was absolutely astonished to find out that they made their way into De Bijenkorf, which is one of the top premium department stores in the Netherlands.
When I browsed through their collections, I was struck by the fact that their style is both curated and elegant, with a feminine touch. They have two stores in Amsterdam, one in the city center and another in Amsterdam West. What impressed me the most about Jutka & Riska is that you can own a unique style without having to consume excessively. Their premium quality and artistically pleasing style shines through their catalogs, and the best part is that their prices are fair! In fact, I saw some beautiful trenchcoats for only 49 EUR each.
I believe that for vintage store owners, having a keen eye for discovering beauty and eternal styles is essential. Jutka & Riska has successfully achieved that, and it's evident in their amazing collection that I was lucky enough to snap at the clothing swap event. I highly recommend checking out their brand and experiencing their one-of-a-kind style!
At the same time, I also have some chance to talk to some of the participants on what factors influences their pruchase choice. Below are some conculsions that I drew from talking with them. I was surpirsed how many different opinions I could gather and I felt this could be a good reference point for vintage store owners to make their business decisions.
Uniquness - everything is one of a kind. That's why people prefer not to go to traditional retail stores. The designs are just too generic and it all starts to look the same after a while. Vintage fashion has its own special "design language" that sets it apart and keeps it interesting.
Durability, vintage fashion is often durable and built to last. If it's lasted through one era, it will likely last through another. This is especially true for items like bike-cycles and organic clothes, which are made to withstand the test of time.
Story, the stories behind vintage fashion pieces are simply amazing! Fast fashion may sell a certain feeling or image, but it's much harder for them to sell a genuine story. With vintage fashion, every piece has its own unique story, and that's what makes it so special. Plus, all the upcycled clothing pieces, apart from being beautifully crafted, are integrated into a story that makes them even more unique and interesting.
Finding the right size can be a real struggle. It's not like traditional retail stores where you can simply choose from a range of sizes. Vintage clothing comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and sometimes it can be difficult to find something that fits perfectly.
It's not always easy to recycle worn-out jackets. Sometimes people hold onto these items because they don't know what to do with them. That's why it's important to seek out stores or organizations that specialize in upcycling and recycling vintage clothing.
For newbies to the city or the vintage fashion scene, finding the right store can be a daunting task. Vintage stores can be hidden gems, tucked away in hard-to-find corners of the city. However, with a little bit of research and some insider tips, you can discover some amazing vintage stores that will blow your mind!
Again, another fruitful day of circular ecomony exporing and adverturing! See you next time!
